Brief Guide What to Expect from Counselling

A brief guide about our counselling sessions, what you can expect, and where to get support
between sessions.

About Our Counselling Service

If you and your counsellor decide to go ahead and start counselling, the sessions
usually start the next week at the same time and day. Regular attendance is
important for therapy to work but we can accept a couple of cancellations. If you’re
struggling to attend, just please talk to us. We understand that sometimes it’s not the
right time, and we’ll work with you to decide on the best next steps.

What Happens After The Assessment?

SARSVL provides specialist counselling for people who have experienced rape,
sexual violence or sexual abuse. Our qualified counsellors offer a safe, confidential
and non-judgemental space to explore your experiences at your own pace.

What Are Counselling Sessions Like?

Sessions are free, usually 50 minutes long, held weekly and offered online or in
person, unless agreed otherwise. You and your counsellor will regularly review how
the work is progressing. You can choose to end therapy any time.

Confidentiality

What you share is treated confidentially. We only share information when necessary
to keep people safe or where required by law.

If You Have Reported or Are Considering To Report to The Police

You do not need to delay counselling because you have reported to the police. Your
wellbeing comes first and we will discuss the guidance about pretrial therapy during
your assessment, including any concerns around counselling notes.
